September 2014

Nō hea tātou

At July 2014 Whānau Hui- intrim chair Pablo Rickard spoke and discussion was generated about how we could keep our mokopuna here at the whenua within the Kaupapa. This was a catalyst for the decision that the Rewharewha Whānau would make about the education of thier youngest child Te Rū Tanu Rewharewha who would be turning 5 on the 28th of August 2014

28 August 2014 was Te Rū birthday. He went back to Te Upoko o Te Ika to celebrate his birthday with close whānau. His maternal grandmothers side, the whānau Olsen, Whakataka. Te Rū returned a week later and celebrated with a paku kai and ice cream with his Whaingaroa TKR whānau.

Discussion between Admin and Rakai Rewharewha (Pāpā to Te Rū and Kaitiaki rep for our whānau) about the role of Rakai now that Te Rū had turned 5.

As taken from the Whanau Hui
Minutes of September 2014

General Business

Te Ru- The Rewharewha whānau have decided to keep Te Ru here at kōhanga. This is
the commitment we have decided to make. Te Ru is now 5 but is not like his brother. We
are looking at what the possiblities for the future, for our kids.

Kei hea tātou

Email received from Reigna Morgan (Admin of Kōhanga) on 10.09.2014

Suggesting that in lieu of Kaitiaki that Rakai and I would instead focus on

  • sourcing funding for new classroom
  • cover a wage for a Kaiako
  • applying for grants and funds
  • Help with research about "Where to for our 5yr olds", "What options and pathways are out there for our whānau
Rakai overly happy at the thought of having an extra day to do Whakairo took the bull with two hands :-)

Hui with Kōmiti- Pablo, Reigna, Rakai, Missy
@ Bow St Depot. On the menu: All you can eat ribs for $15

  • Kōrero with Kōmiti about direction of currently kōmiti members
  • Clarification of what was being asked of Rakai and I re:Rangahau
  • Process of Rangahau and how to inform Trusts of Whaingaroa Ki Te Whenua
  • Sharing our views on what is needing to be done. Our view was that the sourcing of funding is a quick fix to the task. More research required around what the curriculum would look like prior
  • The need to have some "Whakatau Wairua, Whakatau Nawe, Māuru tangata" after the ordeal that the kōhanga has been through with the kaupapa of possible restructuring due to the decrease of mokopuna at kōhanga. Lots of people have been hurt in the process and over the last few months.
  • Possibly contact "Charter review" wananga as intended by original kōmiti and whānau, as there are elements and concepts within this document that is and has not been inclusive for our whānau.

Me Ahu Pēhea:

Rawinia and Rakai to create a document that outlines the intentions and process of the Rangahau that outlines
  • Process/ Steps
  • Intentions- Why (possibly a tauira of what the wider vision for whenua)
For Pablo Rickard to share and discuss with the owners of the Land Trust and Te Koopua Charitible Trust.

Pūmahara:

Rakai and I spent the rest of this month

  • processing the task that was being asked of us
  • wānanga with people such as my mum Teresea Olsen, Cheryl Davies all sucessfull women who have had over 20+ years in Hauora and sharing our ideas
  • wānanga with Kōkā Katarina Mataira about the Rangahau and her whakaaro as she also has been working alongside Whaea Jax and Whaea Pegs with the Non Violent Parenting Kaupapa of Poutiria Te Aroha, therefore has interest and inside knowledge of Kaiako mamae
We decided that we would use the Pūnaha Akoako to guide our journey through this enquiry. As this has become a model that Rawinia is becoming accustomed to through her mahi Te Aho Tū Roa- Enviroschools Foundation.
